Bear spotted in Chaska

A black bear was spotted taking an afternoon stroll on Friday. One neighbor took a photo of the bear and it is now the talk of the town in Chaska.

CHASKA, Minn. - Rod and Lori Coleman's yard is a nature lover's paradise. They live in a quiet area of Chaska, their house sitting just next to a small pond that attracts all sorts of wildlife.

"We have deer, turkey, coyotes, rabbits, ducks. We have ducklings," Lori Coleman said.

From the 14 years that the Colemans have lived at that location, they've seen all sorts of animals. The ducklings help themselves to their backyard bird feeder.

However, Friday afternoon, a new kind of visitor came around their backyard.

"I looked across the backyard and sure enough there was a black, it looked like a bear-- a mature bear," Rod Coleman explained. "Coming across the neighbor's yard."

That neighbor is Luca Contestabile.

"My mom and my sister were screaming and then I walked out onto the patio," Contestabile said. "They were looking for the bear. I saw it and took a picture of it."

Contestabile said it was almost like instinct for him to take the picture.

"My sister said that nobody would believe her that she saw a bear," Contestabile said.

For the Colemans, who are avid hunters, the irony of the bear's visit was not lost on them.

"Interesting that we'd have something like that in our backyard when we go up to Canada to take a bear," Lori Coleman said.

Rod Coleman said as soon as he took a peek at the bear, he called the police to make a non-emergency report about the bear.

Chaska Police said they contacted the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources about the bear. There's no update on the bear's whereabouts at this time.
