MINNEAPOLIS - Joe Mauer will be the last Minnesota Twin to wear the No. 7.
On Tuesday, the Minnesota Twins announced they will retire the recently retired All-Star's uniform during a yet to be determined pre-game celebration in 2019.
Mauer's No. 7 jersey will be the ninth number in club history to be retired. He joins Harmon Killebrew (No. 3 in 1975), Rod Carew (No. 29 in 1987), Tony Oliva (No. 6 in 1991), Kent Hrbek (No. 14 in 1995), Kirby Puckett (No. 34 in 1997), Bert Blyleven (No. 28 in 2011) and Tom Kelly (No. 10 in 2012).
The Minnesota Twins also retired Jackie Robinson's No. 42 (with the rest of MLB) in 1997.
"The Minnesota Twins organization has been blessed to have Joe Mauer part of our franchise since 2001," Twins Executive Chair Jim Pohlad said in a press release. "Few players have achieved more on the field, or given back more off the field than Joe. With Joe’s storied career in mind, the Twins family is proud to bestow our highest honor with the retirement of his jersey – number 7. We are excited to celebrate Joe’s excellence, commitment to this community and special relationship with Twins Territory."
Mauer announced his retirement this fall.
