Brace for a cold weekend blast

Wind chill, frostbite and hypothermia are all concerns for the upcoming weekend.

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. — As temperatures tumble this upcoming weekend, forecast wind chills are cause for concern.

Expect those "feels-like" temperatures to be in the double digits below zero for many of us, with the coldest of them coming Sunday morning.

Wind chill happens when wind whisks away a layer of warm air that would otherwise surround us, formed by our own body heat.

Wind also allows moisture from our skin to evaporate.

When this happens, even more heat is released and our temperatures go down.

This cold snap brings hypothermia and frostbite concerns.

With hypothermia, watch for confusion, shivering, difficulty speaking, sleepiness and stiff muscles.

On Sunday, our coldest morning, frostbite can occur in as little as 30 minutes.

Signs of frostbite include cold skin with a prickly feeling, numbness, a change in skin color, clumsiness due to joint or muscle stiffness or blistering after the skin is re-warmed, according to the Mayo Clinic.

It does look like a second cold snap is in the works closer to the end of the month.
