SANDWICH GENERATION: Seniors stay strong and healthy with Qigong

Older adults maintain well-being via traditional Chinese medicine.

PLYMOUTH, Minn. — Qigong is a slow, gentle movement that gently strengthens and stretches the body. It is great for joint health and sustained flexibility and strength throughout all life stages. Qigong is a movement practice is that teaches holistic body awareness.

In Western culture, acupuncture is the most well-known branch of the entire Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) healing philosophy. However,  experts say the practice of TCM is much broader, as it is uses a whole systems approach to healing that includes: acupuncture, exercise, meditation, nutrition, herbs, and bodywork.

Qigong represents the exercise branch of this systematic healing approach. At the YMCA's George Wellbeing Center,  officials believe total wellbeing transcends physical health, holistic approaches create lasting change, and self-care is a right not a luxury.
