Secondhand Hounds looking for forever homes

Whether you are looking to adopt a puppy or want to be a volunteer, what you need to know.

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. — Saturday, March 23 is National Puppy Day, and what better way to celebrate than to give a puppy a forever home? Secondhand Hounds is a local non-profit rescue and adoption organization, and Founder Rachel Mairose joined us on KARE News@4 to talk about how you can get involved with them and how to know when you are ready to adopt a puppy.

Q: How do you know if you/your family is ready to adopt a puppy?

-Ask yourself if you have the time and space required to care for them, keep in mind the cost associated with puppy care, and have you done your research on breeds?

-Puppies grow into dogs and get old, think of the long-term care and companionship as well.

Q: How can Secondhand Hounds help prepare you/families to bring a puppy into your home?

-Adoption event happening tomorrow at Chuck and Don’s in Savage from noon to 2pm. Staff members are there to answer any questions.

-We always recommend meeting the dog before you adopt it, getting to know it’s personality. Stop by for a meet and greet before making your final decision!

-Our foster program allows families to spend time with the dog before making their decision, we train them and allow them to give animals a home while they find their forever family.

-If you’re ready to adopt, visit our website to see which animals are available.

Q: What if you don’t want your own puppy right now, how can you help or get involved?

-Plenty of volunteer opportunities if you like playing with puppies but the thought of your own is too overwhelming right now. Just need to fill out a form online.

-Foster program is again a great chance for people to spend time with dogs and learn more about them, see if they’re ready to take one in forever.
