Supporting mental health well-being of LGBTQ youth

May is “Mental Health Awareness Month.”

PLYMOUTH, Minn. — In recent years, cultural acceptance and understanding of LGBTQ individuals have improved in many ways. Yet these young people continue to be at higher risk for mental health problems than other teens. 

Research on this topic highlights both risk and protective factors that influence the mental health of LGBTQ youth, with important implications for what parents, schools and communities can do to support the optimal health and wellbeing of these young people.

In recognition of May as “Mental Health Awareness Month,” local developmental psychologist Dr. Marti Erickson, host of the weekly podcast Mom Enough, highlights facts we need to know and suggests what we all can do to make a difference.
