MINNEAPOLIS — A man died late Saturday night after being shot inside Northeast Minneapolis' Spring Street Tavern.

In a statement Sunday, police said officers responded to the business located at 355 Monroe St. NE around 11:40 p.m. to reports of shots fired inside the building. Minneapolis police say when officers arrived, they found a man in his 30s with "at least one life-threatening gunshot wound."

Police said despite life-saving efforts, the man died at the scene.

The initial investigation shows an altercation between the victim and a man in his 40s escalated, leading to the shooting. The police statement said witnesses held the suspect until officers arrived.

Authorities say the suspect was transferred to HCMC for injuries he suffered in the altercation before the shooting took place, and was later booked into the Hennepin County Jail where he remains.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner will release the victim's name and manner and cause of death in the coming days.
