Quotes are important in the sports world. It gives us sportswriters things to write about, surely, but a great sports quote can become part of the lexicon, a phrase that can become shorthand for sports fans. You can meet someone in a bar, barely know the person, and a simple “They don’t think it be like it is, but it do” (number 16 on our list) can instantly bring two people together.
You’ll probably have serious problems with some of our omissions. I purposefully chose to leave off the old golf groaners and Yogi Berra-isms you can find in bathroom books at your grandpa’s house. These were our 16 favorites, they’re ranked in no particular order, and we hope you like them.
