ST PAUL, Minn. — Almost 70 years ago, Rondo was a flourishing and prominent Black neighborhood in St. Paul before it was broken up by the construction of I-94.
Hundred of people gathered on Tuesday as the St. Paul City Council formally renamed sections of Concordia Avenue and St. Anthony Avenue as "Rondo Avenue," to honor this history.
These roads were originally part of the old Rondo Avenue connecting the neighborhood hub to the rest of the city.
To celebrate, Rondo group organizers hosted an event with music, spoken word poetry and remarks from city leaders.
"This is not just a street sign, this is history, this is healing," one event attendee told KARE 11's David Peterlinz.
St. Paul has earmarked thousands of dollars to help the people currently living on these streets change their licenses and addresses.
